Tractor Supply Brings Sustainability to its Customers

Tractor Supply not only invests in initiatives to reduce its own environmental footprint, but also promotes sustainable living to its customers.  In addition to offering an increasing array of sustainable living products, Tractor Supply offers customers programs to recycle used batteries and oil. The company’s oil recycling program is one of the company’s oldest Stewardship programs and offers customers an environmentally friendly option to dispose of used oil.

By providing customers with a convenient way to recycle used oil, this program ensures that oil is kept out of local ecosystems and drinking water.  This is important because a single gallon of oil can contaminate one million gallons of drinking water. Even one pint of oil can produce an oil slick the size of a football field. And yet, it is estimated that more than two hundred million gallons of used oil are improperly disposed of each year.

Many individuals want to do the right thing when it comes to the environment, but just aren’t sure where to start. Recycling used oil is a great place to start and with Tractor Supply stores located in hundreds of small towns across America, recycling for the rural customer has never been easier.  Customers simply bring their used oil on their next visit to the store and Tractor Supply will collect the oil and make sure it is recycled.

In 2016 alone, 67,185 gallons of used oil were collected from customers at Tractor Supply stores and recycled through its partner, Safety-Kleen. Most Tractor Supply stores participate in the program.

Here are some quick facts about oil recycling at Tractor Supply:

  • The oil recycling program in 2016 prevented 522 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions.
  • The emissions prevented by the program are equivalent to emissions from:
    • 58,755 gallons of gasoline consumed
    • 1,208 barrels of oil consumed; or
    • 21,333 propane cylinders used for home BBQs
