Celebrating 10 Years of Stewardship

Ten years ago, Stewardship was an idea proposed by Tractor Supply team members in an Advanced Leadership Class. It wasn’t simply a way for the Company to be “green”; it was a concept that focused on corporate responsibility and the importance of being good stewards of the land and other natural resources, while staying focused on the Company’s bottom line. The group’s final whitepaper became the blueprint of the current Stewardship Program, a strategic initiative that has transformed the way Tractor Supply does business.

As our Stewardship Reports over the years have shown, the number and extent of projects and initiatives we pursue each year to achieve our Stewardship goals have grown exponentially. Since launching our Stewardship Program in 2008, our growing emphasis on sustainable citizenship has placed us in a distinctive group of organizations. We are one of several companies setting a new standard that places priority on people and the planet as well as profits. With the growing influence of this group, premier investing publication Barron’s has named Tractor Supply to its annual list of the 100 Most Sustainable Companies in the United States for the past two years. The list is culled from 1,000 of the largest publicly-held companies, each assessed according to more than 200 performance indicators across five categories, including shareholders, employees, customers, planet and community. In both 2018 and 2019, Tractor Supply received its highest score in the Community category, which includes issues like community engagement, animal welfare and food sourcing.

This past year, Tractor Supply was also included for the first time in the FTSE4Good Index, a socially responsible investment index of stocks. To be included in the index, publicly-traded companies must meet a series of stringent environmental and social criteria in areas including environmental management, labor rights, human rights, health and safety and diversity – all of which Tractor Supply meets. As a part of the index, Tractor Supply becomes easily identifiable as an environmentally and socially sustainable company.

While we are pleased to be recognized as a company that upholds its commitment to sustainability, we are motivated to grow this program based on our belief that a healthy environment, properly managed resources and vibrant communities are keys to a secure and prosperous future. With that, we celebrate ten years of success and look forward to many more decades of accomplishments to come.
